Children learn hand-eye coordination, balance and agility, footwork skills, and tennis mechanics in an atmosphere of success and fun.

Students enjoy group play in school gyms or nearby parks while learning tennis skills, tactics and strategy. The Life Skills curriculum (see below) accompanies all elementary school programs.

Educational Components

Life Skills Nutrition Counseling
PER-FECT stands for Punctuality, Effort, Respect, Focus, Excellence, Commitment, and Teamwork. These are the guiding principles that are emphasized and evaluated during class, as well as encouraged for a lifetime.

Our nutrition program is designed to integrate tennis skills, nutrition choices, and health benefits specific to tennis performance. For example, the first day’s class introduces Forehands, Fruits, and students enjoy apples as they learn that the vitamin C in apples helps strengthen tendons, cartilage, and ligaments for strong tennis performance.

Serving Up Literacy Arthur Ashe Essay Contest
With reading packets supplied by the Multnomah County Library, PAST instructors combine tennis instruction with reading projects during class time at local parks.

In cooperation with USA Tennis National Junior Tennis League, PAST students may compete for section and national prizes by submitting an essay to their instructors describing why Arthur Ashe is a legend. Please see our contest page for more information and an application.
