Portland After-School Tennis & Education of Portland, Ore.
One of Eight Community Organizations Nationwide
To Receive Inaugural USTA Grant

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y., April 2, 2009 – The USTA today announced that Portland After-School Tennis & Education in Portland, Ore., has been awarded an inaugural Community Partnership Investment Grant (CPI).  The grant, in the amount of $35,000, is one of eight grants awarded by the USTA which total $295,000.

The grants are designed to support community based organizations who build tennis communities through collaborative and lasting partnerships.  The organizations that were selected met the following criteria: increasing tennis participation, supporting tennis programming and fostering diversity with both participation and programming.

Fab7Fab7 is made up of seven Portland State University students who are majoring in Community Development. This program is offered through the College of Urban and Public Affairs to engage students in community organization, activism and outreach.

NJTL logoNational Junior Tennis League (NJTL) is a network of community organizations dedicated to introducing as many youngsters as possible to the sport of tennis. The program provides them with a safe haven, adult role models and opportunities to develop positive social and leadership skills, while at the same time enhancing their academic discipline.

USTA Serves – Foundation for Academics. Character. Excellence., the philanthropic and charitable entity of the USTA, announced today that under the “Aces for Kids” umbrella, it has awarded 39 grants, 17 in conjunction with the USTA Public Affairs Committee, for a total of $574,700. The funding source for the 17 grants is the United States Department of Justice. The number of program grants awarded in 2008 was 58, for a total amount of $886,960. Combined with scholarship awards, the Foundation distributed almost $1.2 million in 2008.

The lean, athletic gentleman providing instruction to a group of 12 high-schoolers at Portland Tennis Center on this sunny Wednesday afternoon isn't just any instructor. He is Brian Joelson, at 46 still one of the region's top players and a member of the USTA/PNW Tennis Hall of Fame. These high-schoolers aren't just any old high-schoolers, either. They're the creme de la creme of the Portland After School Tennis program that began in 1996 and numbered more than 1,000 students last year.

Arthur AsheArthur Ashe was an American hero fighting battles both on and off the court. In his life, he broke barriers in the tennis world, becoming a three time grand slam champion, and the first African American male to win a grand slam tournament. Off the court, he was a social activist taking on issues like racial prejudice, AIDS, apartheid, and youth education.
